Canada achieves ranking of 9th in the world for patent activity

Canada's ranking would be even lower, around the level of Poland or Malaysia if, not for a strong showing in patent activity, where Canada achieved a ranking of 9th in the world. Unfortunately, approximately two-thirds of patents filed are by non-residents in Canada. In addition, filing a patent may be less important than who owns and benefits from it. In 2017, 45% of patents filed in the U.S. by Canadian residents were immediately sold or transferred to a non-Canadian owner with a substantial portion of the remainder transferred at a later date. The sad fact remains that innovation, whether developed here or elsewhere, is not owned, controlled or easily available to up Canada's economic and business game across the board.
