Canada’s Scale-Up Problem

Although Ontario is quickly gaining a reputation for disruption and technological development, there are a multitude of challenges facing Canadian tech start-ups, with scalability being the main one. Scale-ups are defined by the Centre for International Governance Innovation as “enterprises with an average annualized growth that is greater than 20%”. While these high-growth firms only constitute 5% of Canadian firms, they are known to produce a massive number of new Canadian jobs; hence making them a critical component of the Canadian economy. Over the next few years, it will be interesting to see how Canadian tech firms can establish a concrete, mutually beneficial relationship with all levels of government to thrive in a dynamic environment and scale-up globally.
